On January 24, 2025, the Confucius Institute staff participated in a team-building and capacity-building session, led by Dr.Oliver Mbayi Omuyoma, an expert in team building and capacity development. Dr. Omuyoma is a lecturer at the Communication, Media, Film, and Theatre Studies Department at Kenyatta University. This event provided a valuable opportunity for professional development, enhancing collaboration and improving the skills necessary to support the Institute's mission of promoting Chinese language and culture globally.

The session took place at the Confucius Institute’s multifunctional hall and on the Institute’s building lawn, providing a versatile setting for both indoor and outdoor activities. Staff from various departments, including administration, teaching, and cultural programs, gathered with the primary goal of enhancing teamwork, improving communication strategies, and strengthening the Institute’s capacity to achieve its educational objectives effectively.

The team-building activities were designed to foster cooperation, problem-solving, and mutual understanding. Held both indoors and outdoors, these exercises encouraged staff to collaborate in small groups, cultivating an atmosphere of trust and teamwork. The activities ranged from simple ice-breakers to more complex scenarios that required creative problem-solving, all aimed at strengthening the team’s cohesion.

A key highlight was a role-playing exercise in which participants assumed different roles in a cultural exchange program. This activity helped staff better understand the complexities of intercultural communication and develop strategies for improving cultural sensitivity.
The session also focused on building capacity for long-term success. Dr. Omuyoma emphasized the importance of continuous professional development in an ever changing global landscape. Feedback from the staff confirmed the session’s success, with participants expressing appreciation for the opportunity to acquire new skills, deepen connections with colleagues, and reflect on their roles within the Institute. The workshop not only contributed to staff professional development but also supported the Institute’s broader mission to create an environment conducive to the effective teaching and sharing of Chinese language and culture.

Looking ahead, the Confucius Institute plans to build on the success of this workshop by organizing more training sessions. These initiatives are crucial to maintaining the Institute’s leadership in educational and cultural exchange and continuing to promote global understanding.

In conclusion, the team-building and capacity-building session led by Dr. Oliver Mbayi Omuyoma was a significant step in enhancing the effectiveness of the Confucius Institute. By equipping staff with new skills and fostering stronger teamwork, the Institute is well-positioned to further its mission of promoting intercultural dialogue and understanding worldwide.
