Kenyatta University hosted Career Week 2025 from January 25th to 31st at Graduation Square, under the theme “Future Outlook: Careers for Sustainable Development in the Digital Age and Green Economy.” The event seamlessly blended educational opportunities with practical insights into the evolving world of careers.

The Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University played an integral role as a sponsor, engaging students in exploring Chinese language and culture through a variety of educational programs. These included a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Language and Culture, a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)-aligned Diploma in Chinese Language, and several certificate courses. Students were encouraged to enroll in the subsidized Beginner’s Chinese course, held every evening at the Confucius Institute building. The Institute also showcased its unique combination of Chinese and Kenyan staff, summer camp programs, scholarship opportunities, and strong industry connections.

On High School Day, January 25th, over 200 high schools participated, providing the Confucius Institute with an opportunity to showcase academic and cultural offerings, such as Chinese Calligraphy and Chopstick Challenges.

The event reached its peak on January 28th with the Official Opening Ceremony. Prof. Waceke Wanjohi, Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University, introduced Mr. Shadrack Mwangolo Mwadime, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, who spoke on behalf of Dr. Alfred Mutua, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection. Mr. Mwadime emphasized the green economy’s transformative potential and stressed the importance of equipping youth with the skills to thrive in the evolving job market.

Throughout the week, attendees participated in sessions that offered valuable insights into university placement, career options, and funding opportunities. KUCCPS provided guidance on university placement, while HELB offered assistance with financial aid. Prof. Benard Kivunge, Registrar of Academic Affairs, highlighted Kenyatta University’s degree programs designed to prepare students for successful careers.

A key highlight of the event was the Confucius Institute’s traditional Chinese song and dance performances, which showcased Chinese culture and underscored the importance of cultural integration in global career opportunities, particularly in the context of the green economy and sustainable development.

Participants also enjoyed three days of seminars at the Student Business Centre, in addition to the exhibits at the event tent. These seminars provided a platform for attendees to engage with invited guests from prominent Kenyan corporations. Topics covered included crafting strong resumes, making career decisions, acing interviews, and navigating the evolving nature of the workplace.

As Career Week 2025 concluded on January 31st, it left a lasting impact on all participants, inspiring the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers. The event emphasized the intersection of sustainable development, the digital economy, and the green economy, empowering students to shape their futures in an increasingly interconnected world.
