Kenyatta University launched its first-ever ArtFest on August 27th, celebrating three days of creativity, culture, and scholarship. The festival was officially opened by the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, Prof. P.K. Wainana, who was represented by Prof. Paul Owuor Okemo, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration & Finance). Prof. Okemo warmly welcomed artists, scholars, and enthusiasts from across the region.

As a proud co-sponsor, the Confucius Institute played a key role in showcasing Chinese language and cultural programmes. The Institute’s participation added a global perspective to the event and strengthened ongoing academic collaborations between Kenya and China.

A highlight of the Confucius Institute’s involvement was the performance by Dr. Mshai Mwangola, based on Dragon Sea by Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor. The book narrates the story of early Chinese sailors who arrived in Lamu long before European exploration of East Africa, providing a powerful reflection on historical and cultural connections.

The festival also paid tribute to the enduring legacies of literary icons Prof. Francis Imbuga and Prof. Oluoch Obura, while celebrating the accomplishments of Kenyatta University’s Arts and Literature departments.

Special appreciation goes to Dr. Zhang Dong of the Shandong Chamber of Commerce and Prof. David Minja, Executive Dean of SLASS, for their invaluable support in fostering these important cross-cultural and academic partnerships.
