The 8th of August 2019, Confucius Institute in line with its mandate to foster exchange programs between Chinese Universities and other departments within Kenyatta university, played host to a team of medics from Shandong Traditional Chinese Medicine College.
The experts and professors of the Care Group were taken to visit the Pharmaceutical College of Kenyatta University, which is under construction. They then went to the Language and Culture Exchange Center of the Confucius Institute. Students of Confucius Institute had a chance to hold friendly talks with the team comprising two professors of the Pharmaceutical College. Present also were Confucius Institute Chinese Lecturers and Volunteers.
The most exciting part of the visit for Kenyatta University was when after the symposium, the experts of traditional Chinese Medicine conducted on-site examinations and treatments for teachers and students. The students were curious to see the diagnosis and treatment of traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese massage. In the words of one of the students Max, "Chinese traditional medicine culture is really amazing. I hope I can be able to learn it one day." Max is just one of the many Kenyatta University students who have the opportunity to further experience learning of Chinese Traditional Medicine.

Confucius Institute is keen on moving its research agenda forward. In line with this goal, the Institute encourages the staff members to research and publish as a way of developing teaching resources that will be invaluable in popularizing Chinese language in Kenya. Thus on 25th October, 2013, the Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University launched its first book, “Tourism Chinese in Kenya”. Much of the success of the Book can be attributed to the hard work of Confucius Institute’s lecturers and the willingness of Oxford University Press to publish it. In addition, on the same day, the Institute held its first graduation of the Beginners in Chinese Language and Culture of Confucius Institute. The Beginners program is offered to Bonafide Kenyatta University students who are pursuing other degree programs.
This occasion celebrated the Institute’s and students’ hard work and achievements. The 150 graduands were challenged to make use of their training in their respective fields. The ceremony was presided over by the Chair of the Board of Confucius Institute, Prof. L. Kisovi, and attended by Oxford University Press staff, Kenyatta University staff, Confucius Institute staff and students and other invited guests. On October 24th and 25th, 2013, the Confucius Institute held its annual training of the local teachers of Chinese so as to build their capacities in teaching methodologies and assessment. This is one of the annual activities supported and funded by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). The Institute invited the local teachers teaching at Kenyatta University and other teachers of Chinese associated with our Confucius Institute. There were 50 participants and 7 facilitators. Indeed Confucius Institute is going places.

The “Culture Week” at Kenyatta University was hosted from 11th Feb. to 15th Feb 2013 to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The Confucius board members, Martin C.Njoroge, Director of CI, Prof. Yang Daping, Chinese Director and all the lecturers attended the function, got together to celebrate the 2013 Chinese New Year. This activity welcomed all staff of Kenyatta University, middle school students as well as local Kenya people.
The content includes introduce traditional Chinese custom, taste Chinese food, Chinese tea, appreciate the performance which organized by Chinese embassy. Some of the participants listened to the explanation of the Chinese lecturers, some involved in the interaction, everybody enjoy themselves to this activities. This activity was praised by Kenyatta University and the community, which enlarged the popularity of CI and further promoted the development of Chinese teaching in Kenya.
The local newspaper, “The East Africa” covered the event. Chinese culture has been greatly promoted in and around Kenya now. Most people know about twelve animals of the year and many people asked before the New Year’s Day what year it is this year. It is really encouraging to see all these achievements and the Confucius Institute will work harder in the year of 2013 and look forward to more achievements and influence. The Confucius Institute bade farewell to a number of volunteers and lecturers who completed their tenure of service at the Institute within the course of 2018. In the first of such ceremonies to mark the end of their tour of duty, the CI Director, Dr, Kamau Wango congratulated the two lecturers Dr. Zhou Xiaodong and Mr. Yang Chi for a successful posting at the CI and commended them for their good work within a period of more two years at the Institute. He noted that each had played a significant role in the daily operations of the Institute notably in the management of teaching, administration of HSK examinations as well as the preparation and planning of major cultural events and activities. On behalf of the CI, he wished them both all the best in their future endeavours. Dr. Wango, in a separate ceremony, also bade farewell to a number of volunteers after their completion of their one year stint at the Institute. He observed that each of them had a specific assignment at the CI apart from their regular teaching duties all of which they had executed with admirable dedication. He appealed to all those departing to put their experience gained during their stay in Kenya to good use and be good ambassadors of the Confucius Institute and Kenyatta University as a partner University. He also urged them, in whatever capacity in future, to continue to foster good relations between Chinese and Kenyan Peoples. The Volunteers who left are Ji Xiaoyi, Luo Yanwu, Yan Yueqi and Yu Haitao.
