Developing Blended Learning (DBL) aims to model good pedagogy and good curriculum design. Material included in the capacity development of module developers included: The 5 stage model of online facilitation (Salmon, 2018), Theories of learning (Kolb, Bruner, Marton, Entwistle, Schön, Bloom, Vygotsky inter alia), Constructive alignment (Biggs, n.d.) and Carpe Diem (Salmon, 2018). The outcome included Academic developers who are equipped to support all colleagues in curriculum design, including running subsequent iterations of DBL, Academic colleagues interested in blended learning, developed pedagogic and curriculum design skills to repurpose material for online delivery as well as Academic developers that can run Carpe Diem workshops .
To ensure the courses offered through this project are high quality, the project has grown the educational development capacity of the lecturers in developing innovative blended learning modules. The project has done this by building a solid base of expertise amongst academic staff in the use of effective blended learning pedagogies as well as development of interactive blended learning modules.
- Universal accessibility to digital materials developed
The project in collaboration with Association of common wealth universities (ACU) has also trained members of staff to produce high quality on line modules such as Introduction to entrepreneurship which is loaded on the University’s Learning management system as well as on the OER Africa to increase accessibility of the module. See link https://www.oerafrica.org/resource/introduction-entrepreneurship-ucu-104
The AI techniques are loaded into the LMS and this module is being used to show the effect of AI on student’s learning.

- Reviewed literature and identified various Artificial Intelligent Techniques (ITS) such as reinforcement learning (RL), artificial neural networks (ANN), educational data mining (EDM), gamification tools and how they were integrated in e-learning platforms for personalized learning:
- Identified the gaps in the current e-learning platforms: In particular the project was interested in which intelligence-inducing techniques were incorporated in the current ITS platforms and whether there was room for creative enhancement including the use of modern AI strategies.
- Implement an ITS system (that utilizes AI techniques – ANN, RL, and EDM) integrated with Moodle, an open source E-learning platform used at Kenyatta University: ITS modules were developed and integrated with the open-source Moodle e-learning platform.
- Equipped academic staff interested in blended learning with requisite knowledge and skills to enable development of pedagogically sound approaches to repurposing existing as well as creating new materials for blended delivery
